African Square at the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.
State Office Building

Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building Plaza, also known as African Square, is in the center of the main street of Harlem – 125th Street. While its current design is bleak and windswept, it is actively used by the community for both formal and informal events, such as the spring through fall weekly green market and the summertime staged musical performances.

Urban Technical Assistance Project

In 2006, Harlem CDC partnered with Community Board 10 and the New York State Office of General Services and hired Columbia University’s Urban Technical Assistance Project (with Glenn Smith and Ghislaine Hermanuz) to work with the community and redesign African Square to make it more inviting and culturally relevant year round. An advisory committee of local stakeholders was created, research was done on the site’s historic significance and day to day operations, and the plan shown above was developed. It is a figurative expression of a historic African village, with a culturally expressive wall encircling the heart of the community. View the final report here.

Currently, Harlem CDC is working closely with OGS to secure funding and complete design and construction of this unique and timely project.
