The MTA New York City Transit has demolished a 100 year old trolley
barn located on Lenox Avenue/Malcolm X Blvd/Esplanade Gardens Plaza,
between 146th and 147th Streets that was converted into a bus depot
in the 1940’s. The 25 foot high barn is being replaced with a 70
foot high state-of-the-art environmentally sensitive LEED certified
bus depot to house approximately 122 ultra-low sulfur diesel buses
and parking for MTA New York City Transit employees. Some of the
“green” features of the new depot may include water conservation,
energy efficiency, material recycling and reuse and a green roof.
Harlem CDC is a member of the Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot Task Force
in partnership with Assembly Member Herman D. Farrell Jr., WE ACT
for Environmental Justice and the local community. We are providing
urban planning and design assistance on this project.
